Due to a computer fault, Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto De Aranjez by Manuel and his Music Of The Mountains (a pseudonym for conductor/arranger Geoff Love) was initially announced as the number one single for the week ending 28 February. A corrected chart was issued later the same afternoon, thus denying Love a place on the exclusive and utterly swanky list of instrumental number ones.

It has often been claimed that for the week ending 11 June, the chart was "fixed" to prevent God Save The Queen by the Sex Pistols from taking the number one spot, these claims being supported at the time by both Virgin and CBS, the record companies behind, respectively, the Sex Pistols and Rod Stewart singles. However, it now seems that the truth or otherwise of the claims is hopelessly buried amid the legend, so though it is quite possible that God Save The Queen was indeed the rightful chart topper for that week - and in fact it was listed as such by the NME - I have chosen not to include it in this listing.
